Having a Ball of a Time

27 Feb 2018

More than just colleagues, DSTA members also unwind together through activities of various Special Interest Groups (SIG). On 26 and 27 February 2018, the annual Bowling Challenge and Football Cup were held for some friendly competition, and it was an opportune time to sweat it out!

The Bowling Challenge attracted 60 players from across various Programme Centres (PC) and entities. It consisted of a men's category, a women's category, and a team category.

Beyond the competition, participants enjoyed themselves getting to know their fellow bowling enthusiasts better and sharing tips with one another to up their game. Senior Engineer (Building & Infrastructure) Jackie Yeong said: "Thanks to the SIG for organising the challenge. We are looking forward to the next event!"

Beyond the internal competition, the Bowling SIG also participated in several external competitions. Its representatives came in fourth place for both the Public Service’s 10-Pin challenge for female teams, and the 3-6-9 challenge for mixed teams held in May 2017 and January 2018 respectively. The SIG also sent three teams to the GetActive! Singapore Bowling Competition Mixed Team Event organised by Sports Singapore in August 2017.

For the team category, defending champion Enterprise IT PC held onto its winning streak for a third consecutive year with 2,144 pins.

At the Football Cup, players were divided into two teams: Team Red and Team White. The match consisted of two 40-minute halves, and the teams were allowed to make as many substitutions as desired to sustain the game's level of intensity.

After 80 minutes of intense play, the game ended in a 1-1 draw and proceeded to a penalty shoot-out. Team White emerged victorious with two goals!

It was a great time competing against one another, all of whom are teammates when representing DSTA in external matches. Captain of the Football SIG, Project Lead (Land Systems) Wilson Kwa said: "It was the first time we had so many new and young players coming down to join us in the sport that we love, and it was definitely a refreshing experience for us."

Senior Engineer (National Engineering) Gerald Hui, captain of Team Red, added: "Despite our loss, I am glad that our team put up a good fight all the way till the end, and we will come back stronger next year!"
