Decisive Combat – a serious game designed to develop critical thinking skills in junior military leaders – was named the Best Game in the Government category at the Serious Games Global Showcase Challenge held in the US from 2 to 5 Dec 2013.

The game was also named one of three finalists in the Best Mobile Game category out of 16 submissions.

Co-developed by DSTA, the Singapore Armed Forces Centre for Leadership Development and Singapore Technologies eServ, the game features eight fictional mission scenarios at different key installations in Singapore, such as the airport and oil refinery. In the game, a player takes on the role as a young Second Lieutenant who takes down the terrorists and completes different key objectives.

Decisive Combat, which took nine months to develop, is the first serious game to be developed for leadership development on a mobile platform. DSTA worked closely with the Centre for Leadership Development on the game design and to ensure cross platform compatibility for the game and its integration with LEARNet.

“We have come a long way. We have seen a lot of great ideas. We have put them together and come up with some of our own,” said Project Lead Cindy Seah (second from left in photo below) from DSTA’s Enterprise IT Programme Centre.
