We checked in with Senior Programme Manager (Air Systems) Li Zhike, Principal Engineer (Air Systems) Benjamin Ang and Senior Programme Manager (Advanced Systems) Evelyn Tan to learn how their team packed the H225M Medium Lift Helicopter (MLH) with the latest tech.
The H225 MLH team
Tell us more about the MLH.
Zhike: The MLH provides greater flexibility and effectiveness for operations such as search and rescue, aeromedical evacuation, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief. We integrated new mission systems such as an electro-optical/infra-red system and a satellite communication system.
What was DSTA’s role?
Benjamin: We worked very closely with our RSAF counterparts, Airbus, and various mission system original equipment manufacturers (OEM) — from contracting matters to design decisions, integration and flight testing, aircraft acceptance and delivery.
Zhike: As the systems integrator, our team enabled the timely completion of the design, testing and production at the aircraft level. We had to balance factors such as mission systems performance and aircraft airworthiness requirements.
Evelyn: We also delivered a self-protection capability as part of the Helicopter Integrated Electronic Warfare Suite (HIEWS) to enhance survivability and improve situational awareness.
The H225M MLH at Singapore Airshow 2022
Were there any firsts?
Zhike: Due to travel restrictions, we had to devise new ways to troubleshoot across geographical and time zones. For instance, we relied on virtual technologies like video conferencing to conduct programme milestones for the first time. When it came to performing aircraft acceptance, we planned meticulously the maximum scope of work that could be done remotely, and then sent a small team to perform the remaining tasks.
Any memorable challenges?
Evelyn: The MLH HIEWS system had stringent platform integration requirements. One example was conducting direct and indirect lightning strikes. We worked with the platform team, OEMs, and DSO National Laboratories to review test requirements and procedures. Great teamwork led to successful lightning tests conducted in the UK, which we also witnessed virtually!
What are your thoughts about the H225M being on display at SA22?
Benjamin: There is definitely a sense of pride, knowing that we have worked hard to deliver this complex aircraft and especially since I’ve seen the aircraft from conception to production, flight test, and finally to delivery. It’s not every day that one can have a first-hand look at these military platforms and witness for himself the capabilities developed by Singapore’s defence engineers!
