24 Aug 2024

To glimpse into the exciting opportunities offered by the DSTA Scholarship and the Defence Technology Community (DTC), some 170 curious students and their guests attended the DSTA Scholarship Tea Session on 17 August 2024.

Starting off the day was a healthy breakfast spread to get everyone energised. After that, students and guests gained valuable insights from the leaders of the DTC, DSTA’s Chief Executive Ng Chad-Son, DSO National Laboratories’ (DSO) Chief Executive Officer Cheong Chee Hoo and Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies’ (CSIT) Chief Executive Darren Teo, on the importance of defence and how each organisation leverages technology to provide cutting-edge capabilities for Singapore’s defence. They also shed light on the exciting career prospects and encouraged the students to take on this purposeful career path. There was also a Question & Answer session to address curious questions on the careers and DSTA Scholarship.

Chief Executive (CE) Ng Chad-Son gave an overview of DSTA and the various career paths the organisation offers.

DSTA Scholars from DSTA, DSO and CSIT also shared their scholarship and career journey. Through this, students and guests were made more aware of the educational development and career opportunities as a DSTA Scholar.

When asked about his scholarship experience, Principal Engineer from Information Programme Centre, DSTA, Dr Vincent Neo recalled how internships offered by the DSTA Scholarship helped him to realise that this is the right career for him.

He said: “As part of the scholarship, I interned twice at different Programme Centres in DSTA. These internships not only enabled me to work on interesting projects, they also allowed me to experience DSTA’s people-centric culture with plenty of excellent mentors and colleagues who always avail themselves to provide guidance and support,” Vincent added.

The Tea Session ended on a high note, with exciting project showcases. The showcase covered a wide range of domains including robotics, drone artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, software development and more. Through interactions with the leading domain experts, students and parents learnt how latest technologies were applied to deliver innovative defence solutions and capabilities.

Defence engineers and technologists shared with the participants their work experiences and the exciting projects they work on.

Lim En Xi from Eunoia Junior College shared: “Before this (session), I was thinking about doing Data Science. Now that I know it can be applied to the defence tech industry, I realised there are more roles that I can consider, with the holistic development opportunities mentioned during the sharing session.”

“I am very interested in AI and analytics, so DSTA Scholarship gives me the opportunity to join organisations with high technical expertise, and learn more updated trends,” shared Leong Li Jet from Singapore Polytechnic.

"This session is a good opportunity for me to find out more about how it's like to work in these defence tech organisations. I am interested in engineering and have applied for an internship," shared Jovan Seng from Victoria Junior College.
