Securing Singapore’s Waters: Commissioning of RSS Invincible and RSS Impeccable Submarines

24 Sep 2024

On 24 Sep 2024, Singapore achieved a significant milestone in its maritime defence with the commissioning of two Invincible-class submarines, RSS Invincible and RSS Impeccable. The ceremony, officiated by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, underscored the Republic of Singapore Navy’s (RSN) enhanced ability to safeguard Singapore’s waters.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong officiated the commissioning of the RSS Invincible and RSS Impeccable submarines.

The commissioning of the submarines is testament to the 25 years of collaboration between DSTA and the RSN. From the early days of acquiring and refurbishing Singapore's first submarines to the design and development of the Invincible-class submarines from scratch, DSTA has been a key enabler at every stage of the country’s submarine journey, ensuring the RSN remains at the forefront of undersea warfare.

DSTA played a key role in operationalising the Invincible-class submarines by implementing cutting-edge indigenous technologies, such as advanced sense-making systems and decision-support engines. These enhance situation awareness and accelerate decision-making, allowing the submariners to rapidly orientate themselves and decide on the best course of action.

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Wong acknowledged the dedication of those involved in the project: “The crews of Invincible and Impeccable, and their partners in DSTA and ST Engineering, now build on this strong foundation to take our submarine capability to new heights. They too have faced their share of challenges, including the uncertainties during the COVID pandemic, training overseas in Germany and being away from their loved ones. Their dedication and the sacrifices made by them and their families have been crucial to our success.”

DSTA Management and the project team come together at the ceremony, marking the culmination of their
dedicated efforts in bringing the submarines into operational service.

The new submarines feature advanced combat systems and enhanced sensors for improved mission capabilities and wider area awareness. With significantly greater submerged endurance and customisation for shallow, busy regional waters, they will play a key role in protecting Singapore’s vital sea routes.
